Mathiatis South is part of the Tentative list of Cyprus in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

The South Mathiatis deposit in the Troodos ophiolite of Cyprus is rich in minerals. Open pit mining in the “Strongylos Mine” has existed here since 600 BC: first of copper, later gold. The mine has been abandoned since 1945, but reopening is being discussed.
